They are providing safe shelter, meals and snacks, health and mental health support and distributing relief items where it is safe to do so. Disaster Health Services volunteers are replacing things like medications, medical equipment and eyeglasses that people lost while evacuating. Comfort kits are available with things like toothbrushes and personal toiletries. In areas where evacuation orders have been lifted, disaster teams are distributing wildfire kits that include safety equipment including eye drops, work gloves, Tyvek suits, safety goggles, shoe covers, N95 masks, hand sanitizer – all of which can be stored and disposed of in the plastic containers after they have been used and contaminated with burn residue. The kits also include shelf-stable self-heating meals, waters and snacks. The Red Cross is also present in the Disaster Assistance Center, a centralized location where people can find resources from dozens of organizations. Even as the Red Cross is helping in Spokane, we continue to respond across multiple states to support the families and communities impacted by other massive fires burning across the West. Shelters are open in California, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. The threat isn’t over as elevated fire conditions continue across the region. In Oregon, there are 61 large fires burning. So far this year, the fires have destroyed more than 2.2 million acres. The Hagen Fire has grown to almost 50,000 acres. The Little Giant Fire near Leavenworth, Washington, has now burned more than 111,400 acres and is only 2% contained. The Red Cross has two shelters open and is preparing to expand the response if necessary. The Red Cross also opened a shelter near Reno, California, for the Bug Fire on the California-Nevada border which is at 15,000 acres and only 3% contained. Across the West, fires are also burning in Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Wyoming. Red Crossers are monitoring these fires to launch a response if necessary. Over the past several months, more than 1,000 Red Cross disaster responders have been supporting people impacted by the fires. They have served more than 12,400 meals and almost 23,000 snacks; opened as many as 59 shelters and provided as many as 4,000 overnight stays; and distributed almost 20,000 relief items.
